Wang Yi Meets with President-elect of the 74th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad Bande

On July 4, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President-elect of the 74th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad Bande in Beijing.

Wang Yi congratulated Tijjani Muhammad Bande on his election as the President of the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly, saying that China is the first country to sign the UN Charter, and also a permanent member of the Security Council and the largest developing country. China will continue to firmly support the UN in playing its due role and support the work of the General Assembly and President Tijjani Muhammad Bande.

Wang Yi said that major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics pursues independence, adheres to equality, upholds fairness and justice, and seeks for mutual benefit and win-win results. China firmly upholds multilateralism, the international system with the UN as the core, and the international order based on the international law. At present, unilateralism, protectionism and bullying impact and challenge the international order. All parties look forward to the unanimous voice of upholding multilateralism and strengthening the role of the UN in the general debate of the General Assembly which will be held in September this year. The Chinese side believes that the General Assembly can well safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, understand and support the reasonable demands of developing countries, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries. The Chinese side supports and is willing to cooperate with the General Assembly in making new progress in key work including sustainable development, climate change, the rights and interests of women and youth, and international peace and security.

Tijjani Muhammad Bande said that under the current situation, the international community is in need of multilateralism, safeguarding international law and the greater role of the UN more than ever. I attach great importance to China's role in the UN and stand ready to strengthen communication and coordination with China to jointly safeguard the UN Charter and multilateralism. Tijjani Muhammad Bande thanked China for its consistent support for the work of the General Assembly and expressed the willingness to strengthen cooperation in the key areas of the new session of the General Assembly.
